Keto acidosis is a condition that occurs when there is excess production of substances or by products called ketone bodies. The increase of these by products in the blood stream may cause a change in pH of the body to be acidic causing a highly acidic state which is dangerous and requires urgent medical attention.
Generally, keto acidosis may occur due to toxins, certain drugs, alcohol, as a complication of diabetes mellitus or starvation. It is possible for a person who is on a strict ketone diet to suffer from ketoacidosis. This is because ketone diets usually contain low levels of carbs and more protein content.
Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy, as a result, when an individual on a ketone diet needs glucose or energy, the body’s protein stores are used and broken down to form energy. In the process, ketone bodies are formed which then accumulate due to the continuous breakdown of proteins through different metabolic pathways. Although rare, there have been cases of individuals with no history of an underlying metabolic illness becoming ketoacidic due to their dietary intake. It is advised that people on such a diet consult their doctor to avoid such an experience.
